GSB Maine Marathon Selects Five Maine Nonprofits As 2019 Beneficiaries

Over $100,000 will be donated to local nonprofits again this year
Bob Dunfey, the volunteer race director for The Maine Marathon and Steve deCastro, president and CEO of Gorham Savings Bank, title sponsor since 2010, announced today that Eastern Trail Alliance, Rippleffect, Girls on the Run, WinterKids and Portland Community Squash are the five primary beneficiaries for 2019.

Eastern Trail Alliance – $20,000

The mission of the Eastern Trail Alliance is to build, maintain, and promote the use of the Eastern Trail, a recreation and transportation greenway from Casco Bay to the Piscataqua River in Kittery, Maine.

Rippleffect – $20,000

Rippleffect is a non-profit youth and community development organization operating outdoor adventure programming out of Portland, Maine.

WinterKids – $6,700

WinterKids helps children in Maine and New Hampshire develop healthy lifelong habits through education and fun, outdoor winter activity.

Portland Community Squash – $6,700

Portland Community Squash has created a facility and a community of adult and junior squash players representing diverse socioeconomic groups and backgrounds in Portland, Maine.

Girls on the Run Maine – $6,700

Girls on the Run Maine is a transformational learning program for 8 to 13-year-old girls that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

“38 percent of the marathon’s revenue goes to local nonprofits” said Dunfey. “That’s due to the generous role of our valued partner, Gorham Savings Bank, plays. Their support allows us to make a series of smaller donations to local organizations, in addition to the money primary beneficiaries receive. Last year that number totaled $106,000.”

“Thriving nonprofits make our community better,” said deCastro. “Being a part of an event that generates needed funding for these deserving organizations is something the bank is proud to support.”

The race takes place on Sunday, October 6, 2019.
